Gaza Civil Defense recovers 28 bodies from 2023 ruins

Gaza Civil Defense teams have recovered the bodies of 28 Palestinians from the ruins of a home in the Al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City. The residence, belonging to the Abu Naama family, was destroyed by Israeli military airstrikes in October 2023.

This discovery is part of the second phase of a recovery project launched on July 19, aimed at retrieving victims buried under buildings destroyed during the conflict. This phase covers locations in Gaza City, northern Gaza, and the Nuseirat refugee camp. On the previous day, seven additional bodies were recovered from the homes of the Nuwairi and Atallah families.

Authorities estimate that approximately 1,072 people remain missing under the rubble. Rescue teams plan to inspect 147 homes across northern and central Gaza, a task expected to require 800 working hours. However, operations are moving slowly due to a shortage of heavy machinery. Under a ceasefire agreement in effect since October 10, 2025, provisions have been made for the entry of equipment to assist in clearing debris and recovering victims.
