Gaza conflict highlights UN paralysis and emergence of resolution media
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has highlighted significant challenges to the authority of international institutions and the role of media in perpetuating violence. The United Nations has faced criticism regarding its ability to enforce international law, particularly as the Security Council has been paralyzed by vetoes during attempts to pass humanitarian ceasefire resolutions. Despite warnings from Secretary-General António Guterres and provisional measures from the International Court of Justice, the perceived inability of the UN to act has led to questions regarding the efficacy of the global legal order for smaller nations.
In response to the cycle of violence, new forms of “resolution media” are emerging to counter “conflict media,” which often serves as a weapon in information wars. The book “The Future Is Peace” by Palestinian Aziz Abu Sarah and Israeli Maoz Inon serves as a notable example. Both authors, having lost family members to the conflict, aim to present simultaneous narratives of their respective histories without requiring the erasure of the other, seeking to break the cycle of vengeance through shared recognition of suffering.
