Gaza crisis sparks protests in Turkey and shifts in US political influence
In Mersin, Turkey, representatives from Memur-Sen and the Palestine Solidarity Platform held a demonstration following Friday prayers to protest the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Ertuğrul Yıldız, the Memur-Sen Mersin provincial representative, stated that the events in Gaza since October 7, 2023, represent one of the heaviest tragedies in human history, noting the destruction of homes, hospitals, and schools, as well as the deaths of civilians and healthcare workers.
Yıldız criticized the international community and certain states for failing to stop the violence, suggesting that the international system has proven inadequate in addressing the situation. He characterized the crisis as a test of the global conscience and justice.
Concurrently, analysis regarding the political landscape in the United States suggests a decline in the influence of AIPAC, a major pro-Israel lobby. Reports indicate a significant shift in American public opinion; while approximately 80 percent of Americans viewed Israel positively in 1991, that figure has reportedly dropped to 32 percent by 2026. Among Democratic voters, positive views of Israel have fallen to 13 percent. Additionally, research suggests a fracture within the American Jewish community, with 61 percent believing Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza.
