Gaza disarmament and Palestinian leadership face scrutiny

Discussions regarding the disarmament of Hamas have become a central point of contention in international plans for the reconstruction of Gaza. However, negotiations led by High Representative Nickolay Mladenov face significant hurdles, as Hamas maintains that any relinquishment of weapons must be contingent upon Israel fulfilling its ceasefire and humanitarian obligations under the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement.

A recent poll conducted by the Palestine Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR) in the West Bank highlights deep-seated public skepticism. Approximately 70% of respondents oppose the disarmament of resistance groups before the Israeli military withdraws from Gaza. Furthermore, the survey reveals significant political dissatisfaction within the Palestinian territories, with 79% of participants calling for the resignation of President Mahmud Abbas. Marwan Barghouti emerged as a leading preferred successor in the poll, receiving 54% support in a hypothetical presidential election scenario.
