Palestinian Election Commission prepares for November 28 legislative elections
The Palestinian Central Election Commission is preparing to hold legislative elections on November 28, despite the ongoing conflict and infrastructure damage in the Gaza Strip. Jamil al-Khalidi, the Regional Director for Gaza, stated that the commission is logistically and technically ready to proceed, with plans to establish over 100 polling stations within Gaza alone. To overcome blockades preventing the entry of election materials, the commission intends to manufacture ballot boxes locally and print ballots within the Gaza Strip.
The planned elections are intended to encompass the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, with a total of more than 800 polling stations expected across all Palestinian territories. The commission expects the number of voters in Gaza to exceed 1 million. Due to the destruction of many traditional polling sites, such as schools, the commission is considering using tents as alternative voting locations.
However, political uncertainty remains. Analysts suggest that the elections could face postponement, similar to the 2021 scenario, due to the war, the difficulty of ensuring access for observers and candidates, and complex political calculations regarding the balance of power and the potential participation of groups like Hamas.
