Gaza malnutrition data and Israel Medical Association controversy

Reports have emerged regarding the accuracy of claims concerning the humanitarian situation in Gaza and professional medical associations. Data from a United Nations Nutrition Cluster survey conducted between May 31 and June 15, 2026, indicates that the acute malnutrition rate among children under five in Gaza averaged 0.5%. This figure remains below the pre-conflict reference level of 0.8% and is significantly lower than the 5% emergency threshold established by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), the region is categorized in Phase 1, which is considered acceptable.

Simultaneously, a campaign has been launched seeking the expulsion of the Israel Medical Association from the World Medical Association. This petition, which has been amplified by the medical journal The Lancet, accuses Israeli physicians of bias and alleges the destruction of Gaza's healthcare system. Critics of the petition argue that it lacks medical evidence and fails to address the alleged militarization of civilian medical facilities by Hamas.
