Gaza Ministry Builds New Safe Shelters for Displaced Families Amid Land Shortage

The Gaza Ministry of Public Works and Housing announced the completion of several new shelter centers in Khan Younis, including Al‑Fara, Shabeer, Al‑Qasr and Al‑Amira, which together house more than 750 families (about 3,000 people). A new facility is also under construction in the far north of the Strip to accommodate over 140 families, bringing the total to more than 2,400 shelter units across 20 centers that serve roughly the same number of families.

The ministry is replacing deteriorated tents with higher‑quality structures that provide water, sewage, education points and regular humanitarian aid. Officials warned that finding land for additional shelters is increasingly difficult because the Israeli occupation controls over 80 % of Gaza’s territory, limiting available space for safe housing. Coordination with governmental and local partners continues to improve services for displaced residents.
