Gaza Ministry of Social Development calls for international protection of women and children

The Palestinian Ministry of Social Development has issued an urgent call for international intervention to protect women and children in the Gaza Strip, citing a “cruel humanitarian reality” caused by ongoing conflict and displacement.

On the occasion of Palestinian Women’s National Day, the Ministry reported that approximately 123,588 households in the Gaza Strip are now headed by women. Data indicates that roughly 28,580 women have lost their husbands since October 7, 2023, while other reports suggest the number of widows has reached at least 64,413. The Ministry highlighted that women face unprecedented psychological, social, and economic pressures, including forced displacement and direct targeting.

The humanitarian crisis has also severely impacted children. The Ministry reported that 54,468 children have lost one or both parents since the start of the current hostilities. Total orphan numbers in the Gaza Strip have risen to approximately 71,846. Furthermore, an estimated 3,000 children are living without any legal guardianship or registered care due to the death of extended family members.

Authorities warned of rising risks for these vulnerable groups, including increased child labor, school dropout rates, and early marriage for underage girls as a coping mechanism. The Ministry urged the international community and UN agencies to provide urgent protection, expand social aid for widows, and improve psychological and legal support services.
