Gaza Municipalities Union warns of imminent water and sanitation collapse
The Gaza Municipalities Union has warned of an imminent collapse of the water and sanitation systems across the Gaza Strip. The union reports that a critical shortage of fuel and oils, which has persisted for five consecutive months, has caused most water wells to stop functioning. This shortage threatens to leave over two million people without access to drinking and domestic water.
In addition to the water crisis, the lack of fuel has halted essential municipal services, including waste collection and the removal of approximately 10 million tons of rubble from residential streets. The union warned that sewage overflows in streets and displacement camps could trigger widespread disease and environmental disasters.
The humanitarian crisis extends to the healthcare sector. Medical relief officials report that the shortage of fuel and medical supplies has forced the suspension of over 13 mobile clinics and the complete closure of the Al-Rimal Medical Center in Gaza City. Medical staff are reportedly facing difficult ethical decisions regarding patient prioritization due to the lack of essential medicines and equipment.
