Gaza Province commemorates Mozambique's Victory Day

The Gaza Province in Mozambique held ceremonies on September 7 to commemorate Victory Day. The date marks the signing of the historic Lusaka Accords in 1974 between the Portuguese State and the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), an event that paved the way for national independence.

In the city of Xai-Xai, officials including State Secretary Jaime Neto, Governor Alfeu Cuna, and Municipal Council President Ossemane Adamo gathered to honor liberation fighters. The ceremony included the traditional laying of a wreath and calls for national unity, peace, and the preservation of historical memory. Leaders emphasized that the date serves as an inspiration to build a prosperous and united Mozambique.

The commemorations also reflect on the broader historical context of Mozambique’s struggle against Portuguese colonial rule, a movement led by figures such as Samora Machel, the nation’s first president, who sought to transform the country’s political and social structures following independence.
