Gaza smuggling trade booms amid Israeli restrictions
An investigation into the Gaza Strip reveals a booming illicit trade network driven by strict Israeli restrictions on goods. As Israel bans or limits certain items—labeling many as ‘dual use’ to prevent Hamas from repurposing them for military functions—smuggling rings have expanded to meet the needs of the territory’s 2 million residents.
Items being smuggled include cigarettes, tobacco, iPhones, solar panels, fuel, and anesthetics. Hospitals have increasingly relied on smugglers for essential medicine and equipment. The trade has led to skyrocketing prices for basic necessities like groceries and batteries, disproportionately affecting displaced Palestinians.
The investigation, based on court documents and interviews with traders, officials, and residents, suggests that various actors, including middlemen and some Israeli soldiers, have allegedly profited millions of dollars from these smuggling operations. The illicit networks have long existed to circumvent blockades but have seen significant growth since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.
