Gaza Strip children receive free swimming lessons as refuge

In the Gaza Strip, swimming instructors have resumed providing free lessons to hundreds of children to offer a sense of normalcy and relief from the ongoing conflict. Amdschad Tantisch, who runs a ‘Swimming Academy’, restarted training this summer after a hiatus caused by fighting. To facilitate the lessons, instructors have created makeshift pools in the sea using sandbags and debris.

For many children, such as eleven-year-old Mohammed al-Nadschi, the beach serves as a refuge from the hardships of war. While the sport cannot erase the consequences of the conflict, instructors note it provides moments of safety and happiness.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical. Despite a ceasefire in place since October 2025, deadly confrontations and attacks continue, with both sides accusing the other of violations. Israel maintains control over more than half of the Gaza Strip, while Hamas has re-established control in the remaining areas.
