Gaza students return to school in tents and temporary sites
On September 19, 2026, approximately 541,000 students in the Gaza Strip returned to education for the first time in nearly three years. Due to the widespread destruction of infrastructure, the academic year is being conducted under exceptional circumstances, utilizing a hybrid model that combines face-to-face instruction in temporary sites with online learning.
According to UNICEF, nearly 98 percent of school buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed since October 2023. Consequently, many students are attending classes in makeshift environments, including tents, temporary structures made of wood or metal, and spaces where they must sit on mattresses or the ground. The Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education has prepared 700 face-to-face education points to accommodate the student population.
Families face severe economic challenges in providing basic school supplies. The cost of essential items has risen sharply; for instance, some notebooks have increased in price from 3 shekels to 15 shekels. Humanitarian efforts, such as the UAE’s ‘With Knowledge We Rise’ campaign, have been launched to distribute bags and stationery to students. The resumption of schooling follows a period of profound loss, with reports indicating that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of approximately 22,000 students and over 770 education professionals.
