Gaza resumes education amid widespread school destruction
Education is resuming in the Gaza Strip under exceptional and difficult circumstances following years of conflict and infrastructure destruction. The Ministry of Education expects approximately 350,000 students to enroll this academic year, an increase from the 270,000 students recorded last year.
To accommodate students, the Ministry plans to operate roughly 230 educational sites. These include partially rehabilitated schools, tents, plastic sheeting, and temporary learning centers. This effort comes as an estimated 97% of school buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged, with over 93% requiring major rehabilitation or complete reconstruction.
Mohammad Abu Jaser, Vice President of the Teachers' Union, described the situation as 'educational genocide,' noting that only about 30% of school buildings have escaped total destruction. Many remaining buildings are currently being used as overcrowded shelters for displaced persons.
The academic schedule was set with administrative and teaching staff beginning work on September 8, followed by students on September 9. The delay in starting the year was attributed to logistical challenges, training needs, and extreme weather conditions, such as high temperatures inside the tents and caravans used as makeshift classrooms.
