Gazi Nazrul Islam faces potential seat vacancy in Satkhira-4
The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has stated it will take legal action regarding Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam upon receiving a formal letter from the Speaker. While Jamaat-e-Islami has informed the commission that Nazrul has been expelled from the party, the EC noted it has no direct responsibility until official communication from the Speaker is received.
Nazrul was recently arrested and placed on a four-day remand in connection with a case alleging his involvement in the suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun. Under the Constitution, an MP may lose their seat if they resign from their political party or if they are convicted of a criminal offense involving moral turpitude and sentenced to at least two years in prison.
In response to the potential vacancy, Jamaat-e-Islami is preparing alternative leadership for the Satkhira-4 constituency. The party is considering Maulana Abdur Rahman, a teacher and local party leader, as a potential candidate for a future by-election or the next national election. Other figures, including Shahidul Islam and Maulana Khalilur Rahman Madani, are also reportedly under consideration.
