Gazi Nazrul Islam inclusion in parliamentary committee sparks debate

Debate erupted in the Bangladesh Parliament regarding the inclusion of MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a newly formed parliamentary committee on government promises. Islam, the MP for Satkhira-4, was recently expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami following the circulation of personal videos on social media, though he remains a Member of Parliament pending a decision from the Speaker.

During the formation of the 10-member committee, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni proposed the inclusion of Islam. This led to objections from Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman, who questioned whether Islam was being appointed under the opposition quota. The Chief Whip clarified that Islam was not appointed under the opposition quota and noted that with 349 MPs currently in Parliament, efforts are made to ensure everyone serves on at least one committee.

The Deputy Speaker noted that Islam had previously been removed from multiple standing committees following opposition requests. The Chief Whip defended the inclusion, stating that as long as his membership remains valid, he should have the opportunity to contribute, adding that Islam does not currently align with either the government or the opposition in this context.
