Turkey begins restoration of earthquake-damaged historical sites

Restoration efforts have commenced on several historical sites in Turkey following damage sustained during the February 6 earthquakes. In İskenderun, Hatay, the 154-year-old Surp Karasun Manuk Armenian Church has entered a restoration phase after a final 'Surp Badarak' service was held. The project is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and private donors. Patriarch Sahak Maşalyan noted that while the church's structural integrity was compromised, it remains standing and will be restored to its original form.

In Gaziantep, restoration is also underway for 200-year-old 'Antep houses' in the Yaprak and Çakmak neighborhoods. These structures, which hold historical significance from the Turkish War of Independence, are being repaired with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Şehitkamil Municipality. The goal is to convert these buildings into boutique hotels and cultural centers.

Additionally, the Gaziantep Archaeology Museum has reopened to the public following structural reinforcements and modern renovations. The museum now features an expanded collection of 3,448 artifacts presented through a chronological and thematic approach, aimed at enhancing the city's tourism and cultural heritage.
