Gaziantep residents protest lack of fiber internet infrastructure
Residents in the Şahinbey district of Gaziantep are protesting the lack of fiber internet infrastructure in the Cebeler neighborhood. Approximately 160 households have been relying on insufficient VDSL connections for nearly two years.
Local residents report that while Türk Telekom conducted a field survey three months ago, the area has been classified as a “special investment zone” rather than part of a general investment plan. This classification means the provider considers the current VDSL infrastructure sufficient based on subscriber numbers and return on investment.
Community members have expressed frustration over claims that they must personally cover the costs for excavation, piping, and cabling to facilitate the fiber installation. Residents argue that reliable internet is a fundamental necessity for education, work, and security, especially as the country moves toward 5G and digital transformation.
