Gaziantep University performs first NK cell cancer treatment in Turkey

Medical professionals at Gaziantep University (GAÜN) have performed a first-of-its-kind cancer treatment in Turkey using Natural Killer (NK) cells. The procedure was conducted at the Şahinbey Training and Research Hospital and the GAÜN KÖK-İDEAL GMP Laboratory.

The patient, a 51-year-old individual with soft tissue cancer in the thigh that had spread to both lungs, underwent surgery to remove a tumor from the left lung. Following the operation, NK cells were isolated from the patient's own blood, multiplied, and activated within the GMP laboratory to enhance their effectiveness before being reintroduced into the patient.

Prof. Dr. Feridun Işık noted that while NK cell therapy remains in the experimental stage globally, it has the potential to increase the efficacy of standard cancer treatments. He reported that no side effects were observed in the patient and that initial checks indicated the cells were effective against the tumor. Prof. Dr. Serdar Öztuzcu added that the laboratory is the only Ministry of Health-approved cellular treatment center in the region.
