Gaziosmanpaşa conducts earthquake shelter drill in Istanbul

The Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality conducted a disaster response and shelter drill in Istanbul to test preparedness for a potential 7.0 magnitude earthquake. The exercise, which began on October 17 at 18:00, was carried out under the framework of the Turkey Disaster Response Plan.

Participants included the Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality Disaster Affairs and Risk Management Directorate, the GOPAR Search and Rescue Team, AFAD volunteers, and various non-governmental organizations. The drill simulated the evacuation of citizens from assembly points to a temporary shelter area established at Sedat Balkanlı Sports Park. Transportation was provided by vehicles belonging to the municipality and İHH.

At the shelter site, teams practiced registration processes and the setup of tents. The facility was equipped with separate areas for men and women, a prayer room, a first aid station, and a play tent for children. The drill also included a simulated medical intervention and referral for an injured individual. AFAD volunteer Aylin Cumhurtoğlu observed the exercise, noting the importance of maintaining calm and coordinated movement during such emergencies.
