Gazipaşa authorities launch pine processionary moth control
Authorities in the Gazipaşa district of Antalya are conducting field operations to combat the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni). The initiative focuses on collecting egg cocoons to prevent the pest from multiplying and reaching the larval stage.
These efforts, carried out between July and October, are being implemented within the jurisdictions of the Yeniköy and Çamlıca Forest Management offices. The primary goal is to protect forest health and support the development of young pine trees, as the moth feeds on pine needles and can significantly hinder growth rates in young forests.
Officials are utilizing mechanical control methods by identifying and removing the cylindrical, scale-covered cocoons—which appear grey, silvery, or light brown—before the larvae emerge. This early intervention aims to minimize the negative impact on the forest ecosystem.
