Gazipur and Nagpur face rising crime and gang violence

Rising crime rates are impacting major industrial and urban hubs in Bangladesh and India. In Gazipur, Bangladesh, a vital economic center for garments and pharmaceuticals, residents report increasing insecurity due to murders, highway robberies, drug trafficking, and juvenile gang activity. Notable incidents include the brutal murder of a five-member family in Kapasia Upazila and several cases of lynchings and targeted killings.

In Nagpur, India, a surge in gang-related violence has seen murders occurring with high frequency. The city has recorded 19 gang-related killings in the first few months of the year, with violent assault cases exceeding 250. Despite the use of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), police face challenges in maintaining order as habitual offenders exploit procedural lapses and legal loopholes to evade externment orders.
