Göbeklitepe expands archaeological excavations to new northern area

Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy has announced that archaeological research at Göbeklitepe is expanding into new areas. As part of the ‘Heritage for the Future Project,’ excavation work has commenced for the first time in an approximately 80 by 70-meter area located in the northern section of the mound.

Surface scans and geomagnetic measurements indicate the presence of large public structures, rectangular buildings, and huts in this new northern zone. These efforts are being conducted simultaneously with ongoing work in the GT1 and GT2 areas.

In addition to new excavations, restoration and protection efforts are underway. This includes reinforcing the walls of Structure D and securing monoliths in Structure C against tremors using steel cables. Updated walkways are also expected to open to visitors soon to accommodate the new excavation sites.
