Gbewaa College lecturer dies following alleged military assault in Bawku
Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer in the Science Department at Gbewaa College of Education, has died following an alleged assault by military personnel in the Bawku area of the Upper East Region. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of Friday, September 11, 2026, while Mr. Abdulai was riding a motorbike during curfew hours.
The death has sparked significant unrest in Pusiga, where residents blocked roads and burned tyres to protest the conduct of security forces. The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has condemned the incident, demanding a transparent investigation and asserting that no authority should be placed above the law.
Additionally, the Kusaug Youth Movement has called for an independent inquiry by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Military High Command. The group alleged that Mr. Abdulai was unarmed and urged the government to prosecute any personnel found responsible for the unlawful use of force.
