GC Biopharma develops IgE antibody detection method for Hunterase

GC Biopharma has developed a precise analysis method to detect drug-specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in patients receiving Hunterase, a treatment for Hunter syndrome. This development aims to address the risk of acute allergic reactions, such as breathing difficulties and hypotension, which can occur when the immune system identifies protein therapeutics as foreign substances.

Traditional antibody tests often fail to distinguish specific IgE antibodies because they exist in trace amounts in the blood. The new method utilizes a high-sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to selectively detect these specific antibodies. The research, which involved collaborators from Seoul National University College of Medicine, has been published in the international scientific journal 'Journal of Immunological Methods'.

While the method has been validated in a laboratory setting, further research is required to confirm its ability to predict clinical allergic reactions in patients. GC Biopharma intends to use this technology to evaluate the immunogenicity of Hunterase and potentially apply it to a wider range of protein-based therapeutics.
