GCAP fighter program to enter service by 2033, two years ahead of schedule
The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a trilateral effort by the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan, is being accelerated from its original 2035 in‑service date to 2033. Program leaders say ministerial pressure in the three partner nations is driving a “modular, phased” approach that will field an initial version with reduced capabilities, with upgrades added later.
Edgewing, the joint venture of BAE Systems, Leonardo and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co., is managing the development. A contract worth roughly €5.3 billion (about £4.6 billion) has been awarded for detailed design and development, and a technology demonstrator is slated to fly in 2027 with intensive testing expected around 2028. Canada has joined the programme as an observer, while interest from other countries is being discussed. The window for admitting new core partners closes in 2027, after which no further nations can join without jeopardising the accelerated timetable.
