GCAP sixth‑generation fighter programme seeks new partners as Canada signals interest

The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a joint effort by Japan, Italy and the United Kingdom to develop a sixth‑generation fighter aircraft and related combat ecosystem for entry into service by 2035, is opening to additional partner nations to help lower overall development costs.

Canada has publicly expressed interest, initially requesting observer status that would give it limited access to programme details and could lead to deeper involvement as a buyer or development partner. Germany and Saudi Arabia have also indicated they may join. Adding new members would require revisions to industrial work‑share, governance and scheduling, with Japan cautioning that any expansion must not jeopardise the 2035 service‑in date. The move follows the collapse of the Franco‑German‑Spanish FCAS project, leaving GCAP as the primary European advanced‑fighter initiative.
