GCash issues scam warning ahead of All Saints Day

GCash is urging the public to remain vigilant against online scams and fraud during the upcoming All Saints Day travel period. The company noted that scammers often exploit the increased activity, distractions, and last-minute arrangements associated with the holiday to deploy fraudulent promotions and deceptive messages.

Common threats identified include spoofing links sent via SMS or messenger apps, malicious QR codes that redirect to fake payment portals, and thread hijacking, where scam messages appear within legitimate SMS conversation threads. To enhance security, GCash recommends that users activate in-app OTP, which generates one-time passwords directly within the application rather than relying on SMS.

Miguel Geronilla, GCash Chief Information Security Officer, stated that the company is strengthening its systems to empower users to recognize these threats. GCash emphasized that it will never ask for MPINs, OTPs, or personal details through unofficial channels, and advised users to only transact through the official app or verified social media channels.
