GCC postpones EU summit in Riyadh following Houthi attacks
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has announced the postponement of the GCC-European Union summit, originally scheduled to take place in Riyadh on October 24, 2026. GCC Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Albudaiwi stated the decision was made due to ongoing Houthi militia attempts to target Saudi Arabia and its civilian infrastructure, which has led to the suspension of operational activities at King Khalid International Airport.
The postponement aims to ensure the safety and security of the participating delegations. Both the GCC and the European Union expressed their intention to reschedule the summit at a later date once appropriate conditions are met to foster long-term cooperation.
In related security developments, the Saudi-led coalition announced the interception and destruction of a cruise missile in the Medina region. While Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for targeting King Khalid International Airport with a ballistic missile, he denied other recent claims regarding attacks on Saudi territory. Saudi civil defense has since declared that the immediate danger in Riyadh and Al-Kharj has passed following various missile and drone alerts.
