GCERF calls for integrated response to violent extremism in Mozambique
The Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) is calling for an integrated response to combat violent extremism in Mozambique, specifically targeting the northern province of Cabo Delgado. During a meeting with the MASC Foundation, the Integrated Development Agency of the North (ADIN), and the Defense and Security Working Group, stakeholders advocated for a shift in national strategy.
While acknowledging that military action is necessary for security, participants emphasized that force alone cannot address the root causes of radicalization. The proposed approach focuses on prevention, social inclusion, economic opportunities, and strengthening community resilience. Key drivers of vulnerability identified include unemployment, social inequality, discrimination, corruption, and marginalization.
GCERF representative Manuel Sambo noted that violent extremism is a multidimensional phenomenon that cannot be attributed solely to poverty. He highlighted the essential role of civil society organizations in fostering social cohesion to help communities resist radicalization efforts.
