Gdańsk archaeologists discover 12th-century wooden church

Archaeologists conducting excavations in central Gdańsk, Poland, have discovered a 12th-century wooden church and a medieval cemetery. The findings were uncovered on a construction site at Sukiennicza Street, formerly the location of the ‘Miś’ ice cream parlor.

During the excavation process, which has been managed by the firm ArcheoScan since autumn 2023, researchers unearthed several significant relics. Among the most notable finds is a 700 kg granite tombstone dating back to the 13th century, featuring a carved cross. This is the ninth tombstone discovered at the site.

In addition to the tombstone, archaeologists recovered a well-preserved skeleton of a ‘knight’ within a coffin. The artifacts and remains are being transferred to the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk for further study.
