Gdeim Izik Sahrawi prisoners end 23-day hunger strike

Sahrawi political prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group have ended an indefinite hunger strike that lasted 23 days. The decision follows commitments from prison authorities to address several demands.

The prisoners' primary requirements included ending their dispersal across different correctional facilities, regrouping them in a single center within Western Sahara, improving detention conditions, and guaranteeing fundamental rights. They also sought adequate medical care and maintained contact with their families.

During the protest, families reported severe concerns regarding the detainees' health, alleging that some prisoners faced imminent life risks. Families also denounced issues such as unauthorized prison transfers, lack of information regarding prisoner locations, and instances of torture or ill-treatment. While the hunger strike has concluded, human rights advocates emphasize that the struggle for these rights continues, urging the implementation of United Nations recommendations to ensure dignity and legal protections for the detainees.
