GDP metrics criticized amid Brazilian economic and environmental shifts

Economist Thomas Piketty has argued that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is an inadequate metric for modern societies facing climate crises, rising inequality, and the erosion of public services. While GDP measures aggregate wealth, it fails to capture human well-being, environmental health, or social stability.

In Brazil, recent data from IBGE for April 2026 shows a complex economic landscape: unemployment rose to 5.8% from 5.4% in the previous quarter, even as average income reached a record R$ 3,732. Despite aggregate wealth growth, the number of employed persons decreased by 338,000.

On the environmental front, INPE reported a 36.87% decrease in Amazon deforestation between August 2025 and July 2026, marking the lowest rate since 2016. To address these measurement gaps, the UN and OECD have established a panel of 31 indicators designed to measure dimensions ignored by GDP, including health, education, security, and environmental quality.
