GdP NRW distances itself from Sven Hüber’s AfD comments

The North Rhine-Westphalia state branch of the Police Union (GdP NRW) has issued a formal statement distancing itself from controversial remarks made by Sven Hüber, the deputy federal chairman of the GdP.

Hüber recently published an article in the union's member magazine titled ‘Richtig Nein sagen’ (Saying No Correctly). In the piece, he suggested that the constitutional oath taken by police officers makes any sympathy for the AfD party a ‘no-go’ and argued that officers should consider refusing orders to protect the constitutional order if the party were to win an election. He further drew comparisons between the AfD and the NSDAP.

The GdP NRW branch criticized Hüber’s conclusions as “legally problematic” and “at least exaggerated in many parts, and in some parts legally incorrect.” While the regional branch supports the union's general stance of incompatibility with the AfD, it emphasized that the oath of office does not strip police officers of their right to vote. The branch stated that while opposing the AfD is a legitimate union position, it is not a legal consequence of the service oath.
