IMPSA begins hydroelectric rehabilitation in Venezuela

The Argentine-American engineering firm IMPSA has officially commenced a modernization and rehabilitation project for the Macagua and Tocoma hydroelectric plants in Bolívar state, Venezuela. The initiative aims to recover 672 megawatts (MW) of electrical generation capacity over a 24-month period to stabilize the national power grid.

The project involves several phases. In the Macagua plant, work will focus on units 4, 5, and 6 to restore 240 MW, with the first 80 MW turbine expected to be operational by December 2026. In the Tocoma plant, the project targets units 1 and 2 to provide an additional 432 MW through the installation of high-efficiency Kaplan turbines.

Venezuelan authorities, including acting president Delcy Rodríguez and Electricity Minister Rolando Alcalá, stated the total investment by the Venezuelan state exceeds 300 million dollars. The project has been observed by U.S. officials, including Chargé d’Affaires John Barrett, and is part of a broader effort to mitigate the country's ongoing energy crisis.
