Gears of War: E-Day announced for Oct 6 2026 with $400 million development budget
Microsoft confirmed that the next installment of the Gears of War franchise, titled Gears of War: E-Day, will launch on 6 October 2026. The game will be exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PC (available through Steam and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) and will run on Unreal Engine 5, featuring enhanced graphics, ray‑tracing and extensive environmental destruction.
Developed by The Coalition, the title is positioned as a pre‑quel set fourteen years before the original 2006 game. Players will again control Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in a cooperative single‑player campaign and new multiplayer modes with cross‑platform support. Pre‑order options include Standard ($69.99), Premium ($99.99) and a Collector’s edition ($299) with additional cosmetics and physical items.
Industry sources report a development budget exceeding US$ 400 million, potentially making E-Day one of the most expensive video games ever produced. At a typical $70 retail price, roughly nine million copies would need to be sold just to recoup development costs, not accounting for marketing expenses. The financial model therefore relies heavily on boosting Xbox hardware sales and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.
