Gears of War: E-Day confirmed for Xbox X|S and PC, features Unreal Engine 5
The Xbox Games Showcase revealed Gears of War: E-Day, a pre‑quel set on Emergence Day, slated for release on October 6. The game will be exclusive to Xbox Series X|S consoles and PC, continuing the franchise’s shift back to first‑party platforms.
Technical director Kate Rayner explained that The Coalition built the title using Unreal Engine 5, introducing the MegaLights system that enables hundreds of dynamic light sources and realistic shadows at 60 fps. Environments feature fully destructible geometry collections, with dynamic lighting that reacts to damage, such as shattering glass and crumbling pillars. The demo also showed Marcus Fenix in civilian clothing before transitioning to his classic armor. Xbox executives highlighted the exclusivity as a strategic move for the platform.
