Gears of War: E-Day development budget reported over $400 million
Insider Gaming editor‑in‑chief Tom Henderson said on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast that the upcoming prequel Gears of War: E‑Day has a development budget "upwards of $400 million," a figure that has not been confirmed by Microsoft or developer The Coalition. The game, set 14 years before the original title and following younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, is slated for an October 6, 2026 launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with day‑one access through Game Pass Ultimate. It will also be available via Steam, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere but has no announced PlayStation 5 version.
Industry observers noted the reported spend raises questions about profitability as an Xbox‑only exclusive. The high cost reflects Microsoft’s broader investment in content, with the company having spent over $20 billion on games, platforms and hardware subsidies in the past five years while facing a revenue dip of about half a billion dollars. The title is being built in Unreal Engine 5 and advertised with 4K resolution and up to 60 fps performance.
