Gears of War: E-Day launches on Xbox and PC

Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel to the iconic franchise, has launched on Xbox Series X/S and PC. Developed by The Coalition, the game explores the origins of the Locust invasion during Emergence Day, featuring characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago alongside new teammates Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes.

Technical reviews highlight the game's ambitious use of Unreal Engine 5 and Nvidia's new RTX Mega Geometry technology, which aims to improve ray tracing accuracy for complex Nanite geometries. On the Xbox Series S, developers utilized SSD-to-RAM offloading to maintain performance despite hardware limitations.

Critical reception has been largely positive, with many praising the campaign and technical presentation, though some players have criticized the narrative focus on new characters over series veterans. Additionally, some long-standing mechanics, such as human shields and Lancer chainsaw duels, are absent at launch because the gameplay system was rebuilt from scratch. The game supports online co-op for up to four players and features crossplay between PC and Xbox.
