Gears of War: E-Day previews highlight return to series roots

Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel set 14 years before the original series, is receiving significant attention following campaign previews. Developed by The Coalition using Unreal Engine 5, the game aims to return the franchise to its dark, horror-inspired roots by depicting the initial Locust emergence on the planet Sera.

Early gameplay impressions highlight a focus on visceral combat, improved movement, and a more linear, atmospheric structure compared to recent entries. Technical analysis shows the use of technologies like Hardware Lumen and Megalights to enhance lighting and environmental detail. The Xbox Series X version is expected to offer multiple performance modes, including a 60 FPS target.

Key characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago return in younger versions. The game will feature updated mechanics such as a weapon modification system and enhanced cover-based combat. Beyond the single-player campaign, modes like Horde Siege and competitive Versus multiplayer are also planned for the 2026 release.
