Gears of War: E-Day faces scrutiny over $500 million budget and sales
Reports indicate that Gears of War: E-Day has a development budget of approximately $500 million, a figure corroborated by industry insiders. However, there is debate regarding the exact nature of this cost. Former Xbox product lead Derek Rie suggested that a significant portion of the budget may stem from The Coalition’s technical responsibilities, including the maintenance and support of a custom Microsoft branch of the Unreal Engine.
Other reports suggest the $500 million figure might represent the cumulative investment in The Coalition over several years, covering various projects and infrastructure development rather than being solely dedicated to a single title.
Early sales performance for the game has also come under scrutiny. Insiders report that the title has sold fewer than 500,000 copies across Xbox and Steam. Given the high development costs, analysts suggest the game may need to sell over 5 million units to reach a break-even point. This comes amid a highly saturated release month for Xbox, which saw a record 210 new game launches in October 2026.
