Gebze Chamber of Commerce President warns of industrial challenges
Abdurrahman Aslantaş, President of the Gebze Chamber of Commerce, has identified high financing costs and the economic contraction in the European market as the primary challenges facing Turkish industrialists.
Aslantaş noted that because a significant portion of exports is directed toward European Union countries, the decline in European demand and orders is directly impacting industrial production. He warned that losing established markets is a critical risk, as regaining them requires substantial time and cost.
In addition to external demand issues, Aslantaş highlighted internal pressures, specifically rising labor and rent costs in labor-intensive sectors. He also observed that unexpected cost increases are weakening the price advantages of exporters who operate under long-term, foreign currency-based agreements.
To mitigate these issues, Aslantaş recommended that Turkey focus on high-value-added production and the search for new markets. He also advocated for incentives aimed at producing goods that substitute imports, which would help retain resources within the country and increase foreign currency inflows through exports.
