Gebze Municipality preserves 172 Ottoman-era gravestones

The Gebze Municipality is undertaking efforts to preserve and showcase the historical and cultural heritage of the Gebze district. As part of this initiative, 172 Ottoman-era gravestones collected from various locations across the district have been brought together and placed under protection at the Gebze Central Cemetery.

The municipality plans to transform the area where these stones are located into a public exhibition space, complete with landscaping and perimeter walls. To ensure accurate preservation, officials conducted laser scans of the stones and the site, documented their current conditions through photography, and created individual inventories for each of the 172 artifacts.

Additionally, the Ottoman inscriptions on the stones have been deciphered and translated into modern Turkish to preserve the historical information they contain. This project is part of a broader effort by the municipality to restore and reintegrate historical values, such as the Historical Water Cistern and the Historical Water Wheel, into urban life.
