Geelong defender Jake Kolodjashnij has stepped away from both AFL and VFL football this weekend as a controversy regarding a secret concussion waiver involving the club intensifies. The 31-year-old player is at the center of a dispute after it was revealed he signed an informed-consent document in 2024 that effectively required him to assume legal responsibility for future brain trauma to exonerate the club and its medical staff.

The AFL has engaged independent legal counsel to investigate whether Geelong contravened league rules by keeping the agreement hidden from the AFL and the AFL Players Association. Geelong coach Chris Scott has defended the club's culture while emphasizing the need to respect Kolodjashnij’s privacy, noting that the player's immediate playing future is currently in a “holding pattern.”
