Geelong Venom signs Chinese star Han Xu to boost WNBL title hopes

Chinese centre Han Xu, a 2.11 m WNBA veteran and reigning WNBL Defensive Player of the Year, has transferred from the Perth Lynx to the Geelong Venom for the 2026‑27 season. Coach Cheryl Chambers said Xu’s shot‑blocking and rebounding give the Venom a real edge as they aim for their first finals appearance.

The Venom also announced the signing of 3×3 specialist Wanglai Zhang, who helped China win a bronze medal at the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup. Both players are expected to strengthen Geelong’s backcourt and frontcourt, raising the league’s profile and intensity.

The moves come after Xu helped the Lynx reach the WNBL grand final last season. The additions are viewed as a major coup for the Australian league, highlighting its growing appeal to top international talent.
