Geely targets 2027 pilot for 500 Wh/kg solid-state batteries

Geely Holding Group has announced plans to pilot solid-state battery technology across its brand portfolio starting in 2027. The company aims to achieve an energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg at the pack level, which would roughly double the energy density of current high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

This technological leap is intended to provide electric vehicles with a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, a performance level comparable to diesel engines. Additionally, Geely claims the new batteries could offer a lifespan of up to 1 million kilometers and improved safety by replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with solid ones.

The development involves a partnership with Dow Chemical, which is providing specialized structural adhesives capable of maintaining stability in extreme temperatures ranging from -40 °C to 120 °C. The pilot rollout is expected to include various brands under the Geely umbrella, such as Volvo, Polestar, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Lotus, and Smart. While real-world validation is reportedly underway, mass production for consumer vehicles is not expected immediately following the 2027 pilot phase.
