This move, confirmed by new Geely president An Conghui, is designed to bypass high European Union tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, which include a standard 10 percent import duty and an additional 18.8 percent countervailing duty.

Key production hubs identified for this strategy include Volvo's plants in Torslanda, Sweden; Ghent, Belgium; and a new facility in Košice, Slovakia, which is expected to begin operations in early 2027. Potential models slated for European assembly include the Lynk & Co 900 and Zeekr crossovers such as the 9X and 8X.

This localization effort follows a similar approach through a joint venture with Ford in Spain, aimed at producing electrified models at the Almussafes plant in Valencia.
