Geerlings dahlia nursery continues family legacy in Heemstede

The Geerlings dahlia nursery in Heemstede, located on the Kadijk, continues its long-standing tradition of flower cultivation. Founded by Cor Geerlings shortly after World War II, the business was established on sandy soil near the dunes, which proved ideal for growing dahlias.

Cor Geerlings achieved early success in 1947 with the water lily dahlia 'Glorie van Heemstede' and later earned international recognition as an honorary member of the English Dahlia Society. Following his death in 2012, the nursery is now managed by his son, Jan, and daughter-in-law, Elly.

Jan Geerlings, who transitioned to full-time cultivation at age 60 after a career in education, manages a workload of approximately 56 hours per week. The nursery maintains traditional methods, with much of the work still performed by hand. In addition to tuber production, the site features a show garden where visitors can view various dahlia species and pick their own bouquets.
