ARD and ZDF to restructure linear television channels by 2027
The German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF are set to undergo a significant restructuring of their linear television offerings. According to the Reformstaatsvertrag, several specialized channels are scheduled to be discontinued by December 31, 2026.
The affected programs include ONE, tagesschau24, and ARD alpha. Starting January 1, 2027, ARD and ZDF intend to consolidate their niche programming by operating three joint specialized channels to increase cooperation between the two major broadcasting institutions.
This move marks the end of an era for certain brands, most notably ONE, which has been broadcasting since 1997. The restructuring aims to streamline the public service broadcasting landscape, which is primarily funded by the mandatory broadcasting fee.
