Geita miners ordered to prepare for heavy rains

Government officials have issued directives to small-scale miners in the Geita Region of Tanzania to prepare for heavy rains and potential El Niño impacts. To prevent accidents and environmental damage, miners have been instructed to backfill all non-productive mining pits and ensure they are not left open.

Authorities emphasized the importance of strengthening drainage systems to prevent pit collapses, particularly for underground mining operations. Officials urged miners to monitor weather forecasts from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and to maintain environmental cleanliness by clearing drainage channels and waste to prevent obstructions during heavy rainfall.

In response to these directives, mine management at Msasa Mine in Bukombe District reported that preparations are underway, including the construction of drainage channels and the engagement of technicians to manage water flow effectively.
